Back to the beginning

We checked out of the Hotel Halsingland this morning and picked up breakfast from Mountain Market Cafe before heading back to the Chilkoot River Fish Weir and the Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Site one last time to see if the bears had finally decided to show up. No bears but plenty of bear poop on the side of the road.  This means there are bears but not when we are around.

We left Haines at around 1:00pm but not before checking out some shops and getting road snacks.

The drive back along the Haines Highway was once again stunning especially at the Haines Highway Summit.

We crossed back into Canada at the Pleasant Camp Border Crossing in British Columbia.  As we were driving, we spotted what we thought were wild horses.  Upon closer inspection, it seems they were not wild since one of the horses had a saddle but no rider.

After we re-entered the Yukon, we finally spotted at bear near Motherall Creek.  He/she was on the opposite side of the road and then he/she decided to cross in front of us.  At one point, the bear started coming towards the driver’s side of the car and that was our cue to leave.  How lucky were we.

We rolled into Haines Junction at 6:30pm and stopped for dinner at Village Bakery and Deli before the two hour drive back to Whitehorse. We checked into the Skky Hotel, dropped all of our bags and then drove the rental car back to the airport. Since the hotel is right across the street, we just walked back.

It was after 10:00pm and we had to be up by 2:00am. We spent what was left of the evening packing up our bags and getting to bed. What a trip it has been.
