Next stop … Haines, Alaska

We were on the move again today.  After checking out of the hotel just after 9:00am, we headed back to downtown Skagway to check out the shops that we did not get to yesterday.  But today there were four cruise ships in port and it seemed much busier than yesterday.  In between the shopping, we had breakfast at Lucy’s Bakery and lunch at Glacial Coffeehouse.

Once we finished up, we drove over to the Skagway Ferry Terminal to check in for our 2:45pm ferry to Haines, Alaska.  We were told to be there by 12:45pm which meant that for the next couple of hours we hung out in the car.

Finally it was time to get onto the ferry.  When we drove onto the boat, we were directed into the smallest spot possible.  Those ferry workers must be very good at Tetris.  We headed upstairs to find a spot to enjoy the ride.

We spent the entire sailing outside and mostly on the bow of the ship.  We even were allowed to ring the bell.  The ride was wonderful and the scenery was awesome.  We kept looking for whales but there were none to be found.  About 1-1/2 hours later, we docked in Haines at around 4:15pm.  As we drove off the ferry, we had a choice to make.  If you go left, you go into town or if you go right, you head out of town.  Which direction do you think we went?

Our first stop was the Chilkoot River Fish Weir, one of the places that Brenda from Carcross had recommended for bear sightings.  We saw the bridge where the bears go to catch the salmon but all that we saw was a beware of bear sign.

A few minutes down the road was the Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Area.  Between the lake and the mountains, it was so beautiful here.  It is such a nice area to spend the day.  There were even a few people kayaking on the lake.

On the way to town, we stopped to watch some people fly fishing in the river.

It was about a twenty minute drive into Haines where we checked into the Hotel Halsingland. It is probably the strangest hotel we have ever stayed at.  This place reminds me of the hotel in the movie “The Shining”.

We picked up supper from Chilkat Restaurant & Bakery and enjoyed it just outside of town.

It was now after 7:30pm so we thought let’s go back to see if the bears are out.  No bears but lots of bear poop on the side of the road.  At the recreation area, we did see a bald eagle in the Sitka spruce.  We decided to call it a day and head back to the hotel.  We will try again tomorrow before leaving Haines.
