Continuing our Newfoundland adventure

Unfortunately our time on Fogo Island has come to an end.  But we still have a couple of more days in Newfoundland.  Nana and I got up early and got everything packed in the car before Pauline and Dennis came back home.  We wanted to have a leisurely breakfast before we had to leave.  We reminisced about everything we did during our short visit and promised that next time we would stay longer.  Last night we learned that we should be at the ferry terminal an hour before sailing, so at 8:30am we said goodbye to Pauline, Dennis and Bridie.

until next time

We arrived at Fogo Island Ferry Terminal just before 9:00am and there was already quite a few vehicles.  The next hour was spent refining today’s drive and trying to nap.  Just before 10:00am, the vehicles started moving.  When we got to the front of the line, the dock worker stopped us.  I looked over at the ferry and I could see that it was 99% full.  I knew that there was another ferry coming but that trip is twice as long since it stops at Change Islands.  It was a tense few minutes but then we were motioned to go forward.  We were one of the last four vehicles allowed to board.

We squeezed out of the car and made our way upstairs.  We found ourselves some seats but because it was nice and sunny, we ended up outside.  The ride seemed to go by quickly and then we heard the announcement to head back to your vehicles.

Our destination for today was Bonavista which was about a four hour drive from the Farewell Provincial Ferry Terminal.  We made a stop at Rosie’s Restaurant & Bakery in Gander to pick up lunch which we ate in the car.

About three hours into the drive, we made a pit stop in Plate Cove West.  I pulled over at the harbour and could see that there were some fisherman.  When we got out of the car, we could see that they were cleaning their catch.  We had a quick chat with them while watching them make quick work of gutting the fish.

We got back on the road and arrived at The Harbour Quarters Inn ($189 CAD / night, before taxes) at 4:30pm.  We got our stuff in the room and relaxed after a long day of driving.

Tonight’s accommodations

Skipper’s Restaurant is located in the hotel so we went downstairs for supper.  Nana decided to have the special which was one pound of Newfoundland Snow Crab.  It took her quite a while to get through all of that crab but she said it was delicious.

After supper, we went out for a drive to the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse to see if there were any puffins.  Unfortunately there were none but we will go back tomorrow.
