It’s my birthday

Today is my 58th birthday.  I am giving myself the gift of a light blog entry.

Since today is just a driving day, we decided to treat ourselves and not get up too early.  We packed up the car and then went to have breakfast at The Coffee Hut.  Afterwards we walked down to Castlerock Beach where we basically had the beach to ourselves.  Who knew that Ireland had such beautiful beaches.

The Wild Atlantic Way is one of the longest defined coastal routes in the world.  It stretches 2600km in length from Inishowen Peninsula in the north to Kinsale in the south.  The rest of our trip will be spent hitting many of sights on it.

From Castlerock, we made our way to Letterkenny where we had a late lunch.  It was then off to Ballybofey to pick up my birthday cake from O’Hehirs Bakery & Cafe.  We stopped in Donegal and toured the castle.

My favourite stop of the day was Fairy Bridges and The Wishing Chair at Tullan Strand in Bundoran.  Here is the explanation from a website:

“Legend says it is advised to approach the chair with caution lest the powers of the chair be disrupted.  Wishers are advised to sit down slowly holding on to both “arms” of the chair and then pause for at least 15 seconds to take in the stunning scenery that surrounds them before making their wish which must be done in silence and kept private to the wisher in order to increase the chances of it coming true. Finally it is believed that tapping the seat twice as you get up will give your final commitment that your wish is a genuine one.”

Did we sit in the chair?  Of course we did.

We finished up our stops at Mullaghmore Head.

We finally arrived in Sligo around 7:30pm and had supper at Hooked before checking into the Sligo Park Hotel (188.00 Euros).

We ended the evening with birthday cake.

Thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes.  A special thanks goes to Karen for making it the best birthday ever.
