Regular readers of www.dorothyp.com know that I can’t sleep the night before a flight. I like to check the clock every twenty to thirty minutes. Around 3am I decided that since I couldn’t sleep, I would check to see if our flight was still on schedule. The only reason why I checked was because we were to be getting the storm of the year over night. When I got up, there was no snow to be found. But our 6:30am flight to Cleveland was cancelled. I checked again just to make sure and it was still cancelled. By this time, Karen and Paula were awake and now the fun began. This was just like an episode of “The Amazing Race”. Karen was on the phone with Continental desperately trying to find a new way to Fort Myers. They were able to get us on a 6:09am flight to Newark, New Jersey and then from Newark to Fort Myers, Florida.
We had to quickly get to the airport since we were leaving a half hour earlier than originally planned. There were already huge crowds at the airport by 4:30AM, and a huge line-up for Continental. Since we had no luggage to check, we were able to check ourselves in at the kiosk, and join the very long line for security. All I can say is that the NEXUS card once again saved us alot of time. It took us approximately twenty minutes from the time we checked in to the time that we left security. The NEXUS card is the best $50 that I have ever spent.
We boarded the plane and then we sat and waited while we got de-iced. I think we left almost an hour later than scheduled and that came back to haunt us when we got to Newark. We had to run to catch our connecting flight but we made it with minutes to spare.
It was a three hour flight to Fort Myers and when we arrived, it was a sunny beautiful 85°F. It wasn’t a long drive to Paula’s sister’s modular home in Naples. Karen and Paula left to pick up a late lunch from Panera Bread while I relaxed on the couch. Once we finished lunch, we headed out to explore Naples. We did some shopping at Beall’s and Beall’s Outlet before cathing the famous sunset. We stopped at Barefoot Beach, grabbed our cameras, towels and found us a lovely spot on the beach. Lucky for us we had a great sunset, and a dolphin swam by right in front of us.
On the way home, we picked up a fabulous fish dinner from Steamers of Naples. It’s been a long day so nobody is staying up late tonight. At least I’ll get some sleep tonight.
