back to reality

We landed in Detroit around 6:30am after a very quick flight.  We made a quick stop at Meijer to do some shopping before heading home.  We had no problems crossing the border but the drive home was brutual.  Since we didn’t get any real sleep on the plane, we each could only drive about 1/2 hour before having to switch.  We got home around 11:00am and then crashed for the day.

A big thank you to Darren and Allison.  We love you guys.

Since it was our last day here and our flight wasn’t until 10:20pm, we decided to just hang around the house and relax.  The girls went out for a final shopping excursion and then we met up with Darren for dinner.  We had dinner at Kung Fu Thai and Chinese restaurant.  The food was awesome.

We all headed over to the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino to see Darren one more time in the show.  Afterwards, we spent a few minutes in the lobby before having to say goodbye to Darren & Allison.

The best part about renting a car from Hertz is that they making dropping it off so easy.  In about five minutes, we dropped the car off, got our receipt and were on the shuttle bus to the airport.  Once again our flight was delayed but fortunately it was only going to be a 3 hour flight.

Once everybody got up, Karen and I headed over to IHOP and picked up breakfast.  Since the weather was so nice, Karen spent part of the afternoon lounging by the pool while I spent some time setting up the new tv room.  You see before we arrived, Darren & Allison did some serious furniture re-arrangement.  Allison’s office was moved from upstairs down to the family room and the family room was moved upstairs.  We originally helped them move into their house back in April 2005 and it was quite an experience.  You can read about it on the blog.

We decided to go with Darren over to A Las Vegas Garden of Love Wedding Chapel to enjoy a couple of weddings.  At this point I have been to more weddings of people I don’t know than of people I do know.  We met up with Allison at Olive Garden for dinner.  Darren headed to work while the girls went to Meadows Mall for some shopping.  We all met back at the house for another night of Wii’ing.

Happy Birthday Darren

We all decided to sleep in after our late night.  Once we all got up, Darren opened up his birthday presents.

Karen and I headed over to pick up the birthday cake from Freed’s Bakery.  Once we got back, we had cake and then had to head over to A Las Vegas Garden of Love Wedding Chapel.  After the wedding, we went to Cozymel’s for dinner.  We went with Darren to work and he was kind enough to let us into the show, “American Superstars”.

After Darren was done work, we all went bowling at Texas Station.  It’s been a long time since I’ve been bowling.  You don’t even have to keep score, it’s done for you.  Karen ended up being the best bowler.  I think she bowled a 157.

We got back to the house and decided to try out Darren’s new birthday present that he got from Allison.  She bought him Nintendo Wii.  All I can say is that it’s a real workout.  He got the sport package which includes bowling, golf, baseball, tennis and boxing.  Once again it was a late night.

Surprise

Karen and I have very good friends that live in Las Vegas, Darren & Allison.  Darren’s birthday is on February 25th and we decided that we wanted to surprise him.  Since our visit would be short (3 days), we decided to fly from Detroit since it was the only airport where we could get a direct flight.

We left home around noon and headed down to Windsor.  Karen’s niece Katie attends the University of Windsor and we wanted to stop and visit with her.  We met Katie at the Royal Canadian Naval Association where she works.  We had alot of fun visiting with her and the great bunch of people there.  They were kind enough to give us each a ribbon.

We made our way to the Ambassador Bridge and then over to the Detroit Metro Airport.  Our flight with Northwest Airlines was supposed to leave at 7:20pm but it ended up leaving at 8:15pm and yet we managed to only arrive 15 minutes later than we were supposed to.  I don’t understand how that happens.

We landed at 9:30pm in Las Vegas and then went over to Hertz to pick up our car.  While talking to Allison in the weeks prior to our visit, we decided that it would be best to surprise Darren at a restaurant.  Allison came up with the idea of Denny’s.

We started heading over to the restaurant when we received a phone call from Allison to say that Darren was on his way.  We managed to beat him by about 10 minutes.  When he walked over to the booth and saw Karen and I sitting there, he was shocked and surprised.  The best part was that he didn’t suspect a thing.

We had a great time catching up over a late dinner.  We got to the house and ended up crashing around 3am.  What a long day.
